A braided rug is built differently from the rest of our collection. Instead of being woven flat on a loom, thick strands of natural jute are twisted into rope like braids, then coiled and stitched together into a single rug in the shape you choose. It is a classic cottage style construction, and in our collection, it is made in round, oval, square and rectangle shapes.

How a braided rug is made
Instead of being woven flat on a loom, thick strands of jute are braided into a rope by hand. The rope is wound into a spiral and stitched flat, one row at a time, until the full oval or round shape is complete. This gives the rug a raised surface that feels very different from a flatweave rug such as a kilim.
What Makes a Braided Rug Different
Where our other collections use a flat, woven pattern, a braided rug is built by hand from coiled rope. Long strands of jute are braided together, then wound into a spiral and stitched flat, one row at a time, until the full oval shape is complete. This gives the rug a raised, textured surface that looks and feels noticeably different from a flatweave kilim, hemp, or cotton rug.
Because of how it’s constructed, this style is made in oval and round shapes only in our collection, and in smaller, accent rug sizes rather than the large area rug dimensions available across our other collections.

Do you make larger braided rugs such as 8x10?
Yes. Our standard sizes are listed in the Available Sizes section above, and we also make braided rugs in custom sizes. Tell us the size and shape you need (round, oval, square or rectangle) and we will make it to those measurements, including larger sizes such as 8×10 ft (244 x 305 cm). Custom sizes take longer than standard sizes, and we confirm the timing before you pay.
